Experiences Week

Jaipur Crafts Festival

Do you want a deep dive into India's extraordinary craft traditions?  Do you want cultural context and craft/design thinking from India's smartest and most experienced voices? We created the Jaipur Crafts Festival Experiences Week for friends and fans of India's marvelous craft traditions.

This week of festival programming is a mix of experiences, information and insider studio visits with Jaipur's top creatives. The Week seeks to create a holistic intellectual context for India's cultural contributions in design & make. Programming appeals to interior & industrial designers, architects & urban planners, craft collectors, handmade's retailers, and fans of these subjects.  The week is a great first stop for longer trips to Incredible India.

2022 Confirmed/Confirming Experiences

Experiences Week focuses on immersive experiences with living crafts & culture.  You'll gain insider information on the real story of native Rajasthani crafts. We'll present vivid lectures from leading craft voices, workroom visits to top makers and studio visits to India's cultural superstars.

Experiences Week

  • A morning tour of the traditional crafts center of Bagru, led by Jeremy Fritzhand of Studio Bagru.  Jeremy is an American who lived in Bagru for 2+ years on a fellowship. His fashion business sources from Bagru. That afternoon, we'll experience a block print workshop. (Estimated costs $TBA).
  • A talk with documentary filmmaker and craft lecturer, Devika Gamkhar. We'll watch her film on the incredible craft history of Kutch and explore the close links between India's faith traditions and craft make. (Estimated cost, $10-15).
  • A guided walking tour with an urban planner through Jaipur's Tripolia, Bapu and Johari bazaars.  Lunch at the Johiri Hotel. (Tour free. Self-hosted lunch at the hotel approximately $10-$15).
  • Day trip to the incredible Samode Palace, the heritage hotel set in a dramatic family palace.  Uniquely, the public rooms were always well maintained and consequently never needed restoration.  The mirrored Sheesh Mahal/Zenana is exceptionally beautiful. The 40-minute drive there and back provides the chance to see Rajasthani countryside and the Aravalli foothills. (Estimated cost for tour, lunch and transportation, $35).
  • Studio tour of a major Indian sculptor, Himat Shah. (Free tour. Self-hosted transportation).
  • Workshop tour of a top jewelry maker where gold bars and rocks come in one side and fine jewelry comes out the other side. (Free tour. Self-hosted transportation).
  • Workshop tour of an astonishing Jaipur maker of architectural and decorative objects that feature in top projects around the world. (Free tour. Self-hosted transportation).
  • Visit to Nila House  (or other destination) for a demonstration of Chintz - from dyeing to weaving. Also embroideries and other Rajasthani handicrafts. (Estimated cost for tour and demonstration $15.  Self-hosted lunch at the Anokhi Cafe).
  • Talk with one of Jaipur's most well-regarded textile designers about the history of prints & textile design. (Free talk.  Self-hosted transportation).
  • Circularity/Craft Maker's Research (Free talk.  Self-hosted transportation),
  • Drinks / Afternoon Tea at the Rambagh Palace (Self-hosted refreshments and transportation).
  • Drinks/Dinner at Bar Palladio, (Self-hosted food, drinks & transportation).

WHO SHOULD COME

Join us for the inaugural Jaipur Crafts Festival, from January 31st to February 13th, 2022. Come for the first week of experiences that celebrate context for the highest expression of Rajasthani crafts. Or, come for the second week, a launchpad for new craft business ventures. Mix and match events to optimize your experiences of Jaipur, the pink city, and Incredible India. Guests are invited for one or both weeks. Events are free or low cost and priced by the day.

Hotels

You're welcome to book into any hotel you like, although we suggest staying close to Jaipur's C-Scheme where most of the week's activities will take place. We'll add festival hotels with special offers soon.

Note: The popular Jaipur Literature Festival ends as the Jaipur Crafts Festival begins.  The Lit Festival creates very high hotel occupancy and February is the busiest tourist/wedding season in India.  You'll want to make hotel reservations a month or more in advance.
